The Annual General Meeting
followed by another excellent speaker
Date April 2, 2007
Time 7 pm
Alberta School for the Deaf
6240 – 114 Street.
FROM OUR PROGRAM DIRECTOR
In September 2006, we had the privilege of having Dr. Steven Aung, a
well known and respected medical practioner who demonstrated for and
with us some of the benefits of an integrative approach of Chinese
methods and technique with traditional Western medical approaches to
various diseases. This month's guest speaker, Connie de Kramer, brings
another holistic and unitive approach to our attention in dealing with
her topic, “Vibrant
Health with Whole Foods”.
Connie's biography manifests a wealth of insight, experience and
expertise accumulated over many years of study and practice. She holds a
Master of Arts in Vedic Studies with specializations in Ayurveda (East
Indian Healing Foods) and Macrobiotics (Oriental Healing Foods). For
Connie, teaching people how to restore health with food is both a
passion and a love. Having taught for 5 years at NAIT, and continuing to
conduct teaching seminars at Planet Organic for the past 6 years, Connie
has educated and coached hundreds of people in making lifestyle changes
for vibrant health.
This is our last Education meeting until the fall. Please don’t miss
this opportunity to re-examine your own life style patterns and food
choices. As always, call Dave @ 465-2685 with any questions or
suggestions for future guest speakers/topics.

HEALTH TIPS AND RECIPES
Lynn’s Wellness Tips - Exercise Do’s and Don’ts
•
DO…perform exercises with a slow, steady rhythm, allowing time
for muscles to relax between repetitions.
• DO...breathe in a normal, deep rhythmic.
• DO…listen to your body. If an exercise hurts, stop; if you get
very tired, rest.
• DO…take a warm shower just prior to the exercise session. This
can help relax muscles and decrease joint stiffness
• DO…use appropriate footwear and comfortable clothing, loose
clothing.
• DO…use the warm up part of the class as a guide to determine
what you are able to do on a particular day
• DON’T …overexert your self. Do not do more exercises or
repetitions than are comfortable for you
• DON’T…ignore signs of overexertion that indicate the need to
stop exercising. These include chest pain, shortness of breath,
dizziness and nausea
• DON’T…let the music or the beat drive the number of repetitions
or speed at which you move. Everyone should exercise at his/her own
pace.

RECIPE
: Hearty turkey chili
Dietitian's tip:
This chili uses leftover turkey meat instead of ground beef. Light
turkey meat is low in fat and cholesterol and works well as a beef or
pork alternative.
Dark meat has more
than twice the amount of fat and saturated fat as white turkey meat.
Ingredients
|
1 pound chopped
leftover turkey |
|
1/2 cup chopped
onion |
|
2 cups unsalted
canned tomatoes |
|
4 cups canned
kidney beans, rinsed and drained |
|
1 teaspoon sugar |
|
1 1/2 tablespoons
chili powder |
|
2 cups chopped
celery |
|
8 tablespoons
fat-free sour cream |
Directions
In a soup pot, add the
turkey and onion. Saute over low heat until the onions are translucent. Stir
in the tomatoes, kidney beans, sugar and chili powder. Cover and cook for 10
minutes. Add the celery and cook for another 10 minutes.
Ladle into warmed
individual bowls and top each with 1 tablespoon sour cream. Serve
immediately.
